Debunking the Myths of Physical Therapy

Debunking the Myths of Physical Therapy

Physical therapists (PTs) are movement experts who help people reduce pain, improve or restore mobility, and stay active throughout life. Despite their invaluable services, many myths about physical therapy discourage people from seeking treatment. Let’s debunk the most common myths about physical therapy (PT) and set the record straight!

Myth 1: Physical Therapy is One-Size-Fits-All

Fact: PT is highly individualized, tailored to each patient's specific needs.

Every patient is unique, and so is every physical therapy plan. PTs conduct comprehensive evaluations to understand each patient’s condition, lifestyle, and goals. This personalized approach ensures that the treatment plan is specifically designed to address the individual's needs. Whether it’s a tailored exercise regimen, manual therapy, or specific pain management techniques; PTs adjust their strategies to optimize each patient's recovery and overall well-being.

Myth 2: Physical Therapy is Painful

Fact: Physical therapists aim to minimize pain and discomfort, working within your pain threshold to promote healing and restore function.

Many people fear that physical therapy will be a painful experience, but this misconception couldn't be further from the truth. Physical therapists are trained to understand pain and discomfort levels and to adjust their techniques accordingly. They utilize a variety of methods such as manual therapy, stretching, and exercises designed to alleviate pain rather than cause it. The primary goal is to improve function and mobility without exacerbating discomfort. Patients often report that their pain decreases over time as therapy progresses, leading to a more active and pain-free lifestyle.

Myth 3: Physical Therapy is Only for Injuries and Accidents

Fact: Physical therapists do much more than treat post-injury or post-surgery patients. They diagnose and manage a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, cardiovascular problems, and long COVID.

Physical therapy encompasses a wide range of services beyond injury rehabilitation. PTs are skilled in managing chronic conditions like arthritis, back pain, and even heart disease. They play a crucial role in helping patients manage symptoms and improve their quality of life. For instance, those with chronic pain can benefit from PT techniques that focus on pain relief and mobility enhancement. Additionally, PTs provide essential care for patients recovering from severe illnesses such as long COVID, helping them regain strength and function.

Myth 4: Physical Therapists Will Tell You to Stop Doing the Activities You Love

Fact: PTs aim to help you resume your favorite activities safely, often suggesting alternative exercises during recovery.

A common fear is that physical therapy will mean giving up beloved activities. However, physical therapists understand the importance of staying active and engaged in activities that bring joy and fulfillment. Their goal is to help you return to these activities safely. If an activity poses a risk during recovery, PTs will suggest modifications or alternative exercises to keep you active. For example, if a runner has a knee injury, a PT might recommend swimming or cycling as a low-impact alternative until the knee is strong enough for running again.

Myth 5: You Will Be Cured in One Session

Fact: Physical therapy is a process, and the number of sessions required depends on the injury or ailment, the body's response to therapy, and other factors.

Recovery through physical therapy is a journey, not a quick fix. While some patients may experience significant relief after just a few sessions, others might require ongoing therapy to achieve their goals. PTs schedule sessions based on the severity of the condition and the patient's progress. Each session builds upon the last to reach the patient’s long term goals. Consistency and adherence to the prescribed treatment plan, including home exercises, are crucial for achieving the best outcomes.

Myth 6: Surgery is My Only Option

Fact: Physical therapy can often be as effective as surgery for conditions like rotator cuff tears, degenerative disk disease, and certain types of knee osteoarthritis.

Surgery is not always the best or only solution for musculoskeletal issues. Many conditions can be effectively managed with physical therapy, which can serve as a non-invasive alternative. For example, PT can help strengthen the muscles around a damaged joint, improve flexibility, and reduce pain, potentially eliminating the need for surgical intervention. Studies have shown that physical therapy can be just as effective as surgery for conditions such as meniscal tears and certain back problems, offering patients a safer, less invasive treatment option.

Myth 7: I Can Do Physical Therapy Myself

Fact: While your participation is crucial, you still need the expertise of a licensed physical therapist.

Physical therapy is more than just doing exercises. PTs create personalized treatment plans based on a thorough evaluation, including a patient’s medical history, physical examination, and specific needs. This personalized approach ensures that the treatment addresses the root cause of the problem. Additionally, physical therapists use specialized techniques such as manual therapy and joint mobilization, which require professional training and cannot be replicated on your own. Their guidance ensures that exercises are done correctly and safely to avoid further injury.

Don’t just take our word for it, hear from our patients:

“I found Casey on Clinical Athlete, as I was looking for a DPT that would have a competitive athlete’s perspective on what injury recovery should look like, and for someone who would challenge me beyond the generic physical therapy treatment I’ve had in the past. She’s pushed me to succeed, challenging me to get well outside of my comfort zone, and her innovative approach to identifying and addressing problems has been enlightening.  I’ve neglected what I believed to be minor facets of my physical health for years, accepting pain as the cost of a demanding physical fitness regimen. Thankfully, Casey knows better. As just one example, Casey made some tweaks to my squat form, and I’m hitting new PRs at the age of 37, pain free, after being told by a knee surgeon that I should give it all up. Casey’s the type of doc that will understand your desire to constantly challenge yourself and strive to explore your full potential. I can’t recommend her highly enough.”  ~ N.J.

“After dealing with hip pain from working too hard for an older body I turned to Casey and Henry. Casey completed my evaluation and told me Henry would be the perfect fit for me. She was right on the money! After about seven sessions Henry was able to train me to use my body in different ways for my job. My job requires loading packages into trucks for 4 hours a day, 1000 pieces and from 1-150 pounds. Every session we worked on something new that would help me do my job pain free. If I could not get a certain exercise, Henry would make one little adjustment and I was able to move on. The things we worked on in the clinic also transferred into everyday living. I stand straighter, walked better and breathe better. I am pain free months later and I have Henry to thank for it!” ~J.L.

“According to my MRI and two orthopedic surgeons, I need a total knee replacement due to arthritis, torn meniscus, cysts, and other issues from ACL surgery 25 years ago. Henry, Casey and Emily built my program around what I wanted to do, which included skiing, hiking, running, and avoiding surgery. I’m several years out from that MRI and doing more now than I did five years ago. They are thoughtful and patient problem solvers who believe in the capabilities of the human body, and their mindset is contagious. Plus, they’re fun and they work hard as athletes and professionals. Highly recommend.” ~H.B.
